CV

Graduates & Trainee Recruiters

Remember: Your CV is a marketing tool – it’s only objective is to prompt potential employers to want to meet you.
The covering letter or email should make it clear why you are relevant for the role.
For generic or speculative applications make the following clear: minimum salary required and locations considered

Basic rules:

Keep it concise – usually no more than 2 pages
Quantify everything – especially Billings and Achievements
Avoid unusual acronyms (or provide explanations)
Be 100% honest at all times – eg include all jobs
Always use standard layout & fonts, avoid tables and graphics etc

Space savers:

Summarise Education & Training
Don’t just copy & paste your whole job spec onto your CV – include only relevant details
At this stage, don’t include reference details
Summarise interests & hobbies

Interviews

You only get one chance to make a first impression

Telephone interviews:

Be prepared - this is a business call, not a friendly chat

avoid calling from loud or distracting places – make sure background noise is very limited. Ideally call from a landline
have a copy of your CV with you
pre-research the company, have intelligent questions prepared
your sole objective should be to close the client for a face to face interview

Face-to-face interviews:

Proper Preparation Prevents Poor Performance - Clients are very negative about lack of preparation and research

Basic rules:

your primary objective is to gain an offer from the client
plan your journey well in advance
smart, conservative appearance always
firm handshake, smile often, plenty of eye contact, and use the Interviewer’s name
take a copy of your CV
take a pen & notepad for notes and your pre-prepared intelligent questions
really know your facts & figures, eg Billings, Rates, Names and Dates
if possible produce documentary evidence, eg payslips, figure sheets etc
be primed to sell yourself within 30-60 seconds – why should they want you
always close
