Crowd Pleaser

Networking has a reputation for being confined to executive search firms and pushy entrepreneurs, but it can boost any recruiter’s bottom line.
Once a month Helen McAnally gets up at the crack of dawn to attend a 7am breakfast networking meeting.
Every participant has a 30-second slot to ‘pitch’ his or her business and there has to be a very good reason for not turning up.
As well as having to make a regular commitment, members are expected to take along referrals too, and to play their part in expanding the network.
These monthly meetings, which McAnally describes as “more daunting than the day job”, would inspire fear in some of the most confident businessmen and women, but despite the pressure, they have proved fruitful for business. “It’s a very results-focused way of meeting people but the upshot is I’ve added tens of thousands of pounds to the bottom line,” says McAnally, a director at HR recruitment firm Chamberlain Beaumont.
In this case, a formal networking environment has clearly paid off. This is partly because of the quality of referrals
McAnally receives, she explains, although it’s harder to refuse recommendations because people’s reputations are on the line.
“At the end of the day it’s business, and you’ve just got to use the sensitivity you would with friends,” she says
Consultants for recruitment-to-recruitment firms live by referrals and prefer the direct approach too.
According to Vic Chuntz, Chief Executive of rec-to-rec Aston Taylor, any contact that comes from a referral is more likely to be successful because the referee feels a level of obligation. “Whether you’re talking to people face-to-face or on the phone, you need to find out who they know. It’s what makes the world go round,” says Chuntz.
"If you say you’re going to phone someone next week, make sure you do"
"The trick of networking is to keep in touch with someone and to find out what they’re into,” he adds. “You have to keep people on your radar.”
Networking etiquette in some circles dictates that you never broach the topic
of business without a clear signal. Chuntz has no compunction about diving in because it’s a basic tool of his trade.
“We look at it for long-term results – but we expect a result. My approach is ‘Let’s not beat around the bush, we’re all busy people’,” he says.

Recruiters – How Do You Relax ?

Aston Taylor conducted a web based survey over the last few months, asking the question : What Do Recruiters Do To Relax ?
The results were : 12 % take exercise or play a sport, 6 % watch TV, 10 % work , while 71 % drink & socialise.
So the Recruitment population seems to drink & party far too much, and doesn’t take enough exercise or keep up with current affairs. And a few people clearly need to chill out !
As well as obtaining these statistics a number of comments were also sent in relating to the topic. One over-worked Consultant said: ”Relax, you must be joking. At my place we don’t get the chance to breathe. We work such long hours it’s I can do to get home, eat, sleep, then get ready for work again!”
Although at the other extreme an anonymous person commented: “I’m currently relaxing, feet up on the desk with a cold beer and plan to have a snooze later – as long as the boss doesn’t come in.”
