Letters... Land of the Giants or is Small Beautiful?
Michael Bowden, Sales Director, Aston Taylor ~ We felt the need to comment on your recent article 'Is being big always beautiful?' (Recruiter, 2 April), concerning the current mergers and acquisitions within the industry.
As a large UK rec-to-rec consultancy we are constantly placing recruiters at all levels, from smaller companies to larger corporations and vice versa.
Many recruiters tell us they prefer larger companies as they offer greater long-term security, structured career options, and the advantage of having a well-known brand behind them. However, just as many inform us they wish to work at smaller firms on the basis they will receive more recognition and appreciation, increased earning potential and the opportunity for more rapid career advancement.
Both have selling points and valid reasons to be leaving or joining, and recruiters will always have their preferences to the type of company they want to work for, or are best suited to. However, in a desperately candidate-short market, is removing that choice from them really likely to improve recruiter availability?
If the giants want to dominate, they must consider their offerings not only to the end user, but to their own staff — ideally combining the strong points of both large and small companies under the same roof, and the smaller 'gems' of the market will have to keep up, or lose out.
In our experience there are only a handful of consultancies currently providing their staff all the advantages of a big company, while also appealing to the smaller firm enthusiast.

Space issues at Aston Taylor led to a big decision by the management
Over the last few months, Aston Taylor, the recruitment-to-recruitment company based in St.Albans, Hertfordshire, have been locked in the board room, discussing their growth plans, strategy and whose turn it is to make the tea. And of course ‘The Wall’ debate.
The decision to bring the wall down came as the number of employees hit 30, and the call for more space was being shouted from the rooftops. Ok, the desktops maybe - and we like to listen to the feedback and needs of our staff, which is probably one of the many reasons our staff retention is high, and in honesty, we wanted to get out of that board room! Some of the offers from our consultants to bring down the wall themselves by running through it were politely declined.
D-Day
So, we bit the bullet and invited the builders in. Little did we know that the day we chose as ‘THE day’ was also the day that gales and heavy rain decided to visit us here in Hertfordshire. Not only did we have to contend with the Great Wall of Aston Taylor coming down, but we had to bare open doors and wind-swept hair all day – much to the upset of the image-conscious males in the office.
Nevertheless the wall coming down is good news for Aston Taylor. With 20 per cent growth year on year, the extra space has now given us the green light to immediately recruit 15 new consultants to accommodate and develop that growth and prepare the infrastructure for another successful year.
“We have ambitious staff here, and we want to be able to establish career paths for them - and that requires space. Additional recruitment into our 3 divisions (Trainee, Consultants and Management) will create the need for re-structure, and in turn career opportunities. It was a no-brainer, the wall needed to come down!” said Andrea Saunders, Operations Director.
Training Room
We are now able to have a dedicated training room to embrace the growing demand for the recruitment of graduates, due to the decreasing numbers of quality, experienced consultants in the market.
In addition, we have extra interview rooms and the capacity and ability to welcome clients into the offices to meet the team and be even more confident of the service we offer. However, some of the employees of Aston Taylor vocalised their concerns. Incredibly anxious and almost in a state of panic, Max Abrahams, Senior Consultant, was quoted on saying “I’m not sure I like it – I mean, where on earth are we going to have our fortnightly head and shoulder massages? Surely we can’t have them in the middle of the office!” No Max, we have dedicated space for that too. Breathe.
The demand for new talent in the UK recruitment market means that we too need to recruit new talent to service that need. So, the new desks are on their way, the wall is down, and we’ve ordered another radio for the other side of the office!

Clients Ignore Ageism Laws with Rec-to-Recs
Recruiters are frequently asking rec-to-rec companies to break the law on age discrimination, the chair of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation's rec-to-rec sector group has said.
Keith Canning, Sales Director at rec-to-rec Aston Taylor, told Recruiter that "from time to time" clients asked them questions such as "how old is the client?". "We tell them that we can't respond to this request for information," he said.

Aston Taylor: Spreading Happiness — and Loyalty
Recruitment-to-recruitment firm Aston Taylor is to introduce a new share option scheme for all its members of staff next month.
Chief Executive, Vic Chuntz, told Recruiter: "The loyalty aspect of the scheme is important but it's also about rewarding success. We want a situation where everyone has a sense of owning the company, which will create a better atmosphere."
The share option scheme is the latest initiative the company has introduced to reward loyalty and continue low staff turnover.
It has recently introduced an in-house gym, and offers free neck and head massages, free fruit and the chance to earn 47 days holiday.
